I am often asked for career advice by people who say, “I feel a vague anxiety when I think about my career,” or “I can’t picture my future self.” When someone seeks this kind of advice, what they truly need is not an easy-to-digest talk about a “brilliant career strategy” or a “roadmap to success” that floods the world, but rather a trigger that turns their worries into action. Sometimes, when you approach someone for inspiration—saying, “I’d like to hear your views on career development”—they reply, “No, no, my path isn’t reproducible.” The phrase “not reproducible” reflects the high-uncertainty choices behind what we call a career: the uniqueness of past projects, the history of technology selections, and the personal shifts in interests. In situations that seem “unplanned,” key decisions—promotions, job changes, or role transitions—are in fact guided by the skills acquired at each stage, past experiences, and the values that make up that person’s identity. This session seeks to learn from the very “decision-making processes” behind careers that appear “non-reproducible” or “unplanned.” Drawing on more than ten years of Android app development, experience as an engineering manager, and business experience launching multiple ventures, I will share real-world lessons and insights that only a senior engineer with an “unreproducible” career can offer—what seasoned engineers are really thinking about and learning along the way.
