Getting Started with Material3 Expressive

In May 2025, Google announced “Material3 Expressive,” a design style that pursues a more emotionally resonant and expressive UI than previous iterations of Material Design. Curved shapes, bold motion, and a new color system deliver an attractive visual update, yet many people may feel anxious that “bringing it into a product seems difficult.” This session will introduce the background and philosophy of Material3 Expressive and, through implementation examples of components available in Jetpack Compose, compare how the UI changes. We will also implement various applications with Material3 Expressive and examine which use cases it suits. Drawing on Google’s research results and our own experiments, we will organize and present viewpoints for deciding whether to adopt Material3 Expressive and discussion points within your team. Through this session, we hope to give you a reason to think, “Maybe we should give Material3 Expressive a try.” The planned session content is as follows. - What is Material3 Expressive We will go over what Material3 Expressive is and the background research behind its design. - List of Material3 Expressive Components We will introduce the components updated in Material3 Expressive along with implementation code. - Comparison of Material3 and Material3 Expressive We will implement the same UI using both Material3 and Material3 Expressive and compare how the experience and impression change. - Use cases suitable for Material3 Expressive By building apps across various genres, we will compare examples where Expressive works and where it does not. - Decision criteria for introducing Expressive We will describe viewpoints for team discussions on whether to adopt Expressive.
